In Singapore, the way things are is to pay for a tutor who can produce results. If this tutor does not produce that straight A within one month, change another.
However, this method of finding the the best tutor does not take into account the learning pattern of the student. Granted that producing results is part of the "product" a parent is eager to get when using the services of a tutor, parents must look for someone who has the understanding of his/ her child. Is your child the rebellious type? Is she slow in picking up information but picks up quickly after that? Is he trying to tell you something by pretending to understand the subject?
We need to address the issue of the psychology of learning because without understanding this, our effort to translate studying hours into grades will be at best limited.
A good tutor can address the issue of psychology at the same time as addressing the subject matter to be learned. He needs to be a people-oriented person as well as an academic expert. This is the real distinction of a true teacher.
